Hook Fun Run Race Report

20 May 2007

Distance: 10 miles

Type: Road

Weather: 18c and feeling hotter, little wind.

With the weather looking great, the narrow start finish gave a good atmosphere at the start with lots of runners and supporters, loads of Basingstoke runners arrived, the most I have seen at a race,

Alasdair went tearing down the road from the start, everyone else started at a more leisurely pace with Nick and I leading the way over Jason, Rob and Mark. Soon Mark had picked up the pace and went past and off in to the distance, Jason eased past and Rob showed his usual clinical pace control slowly getting faster and going past. Jason did not have a good race complaining of a stitch as I went past at around 4 miles. Mark was also suffering and we went past. At about half way Nick slowly started to move away and opened a gap that, no matter how hard I tried, I would never be able to close. On the long straight through the countryside we were all line astern, Rob,  Nick and me, with about a thirty second gap between each of us.

A text book race for me. I really wanted to beat 70 minutes and stuck to a sub 7 minute pace the whole way round and felt ok at the end, could have gone a bit faster, maybe!

Overall a very enjoyable race, loads of marshals out on the course and a very good start/finish point at the school with a good atmosphere and loads of people.
